Battle Royale

Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★

In this satire, Class B believes they are embarking on a field trip until they wake after passing out on their school bus and realize their teacher has been killed. They are hoarded into a military installation where they learn the details of the exercise they’ve been chosen to be a part of. The world has become overrun with crime and the younger generations have become ruthless in their crimes against the populus. In a last ditch attempt to regain order and show the kids who is in charge, the Battle Royale act was enacted. During BR a class will be chosen at random and brought to a secluded island, where they will be given weapons and turned against each other. Their goal is simply to outlive their classmates at the end of three days.

Takeshi Kitano is considered the star power in this film and plays the once injured former teacher, who now is in charge of the Battle Royale Survival Program. Kitano brings his trademark ferocity to this role, but the real accolades go to the young actors playing the warring students. Nanahara, the stories emphasis is played by Tatsuya Fujiwara who brings both the requisite children’s vulnerability with a strong core of resiliency. Also starring among many fantastic performances is Chiaki Furiyami who went on to star in Tarantino’s Kill Bill as the bloodthirsty Gogo Yubari. These are a few of the actors who excel in these juicy roles, but this movie is clearly a collaboration of both story and skilled acting. To say any one person made this movie would be to exclude dozens of adept performances.
