Alien (1979) - Mikey B

Created on July 16th, 2008 by Mikey B

Imagine, if you will, the vast emptiness of space, the echoing corridors of nothingness, lit only by the countless stars thousands of miles away dotting the black backdrop. Now, imagine a massive ship sliding through the abyss of space, traveling through galaxies to a destination unknown. Its boxy features and immense volume seem miniscule in the greater scheme of the vast, unformed territory. Travel inside the ship, and move through its rough designs and simplistic layout. The silence inside the space ship is only matched by the stillness on the outside of the ship’s massive walls. All of this is broken by the operating of the ship’s computer system as it flickers to life, an operating system showing brightly off the glass mask of a helmet sitting in the captain’s seat. You’ve just experienced the opening of Alien, probably one of the best films ever made.

The Return of Ellen Ripley?

Ellen Ripley on screamindemon.com

It’s possible. Sigourney Weaver told OK Magazine that she wouldn’t mind bringing her character back to the big screen. With the comeback of other notable film icons such as Rambo, Rocky, Indiana Jones and John McClain, Mrs. Weaver may be looking for something similar.

“I would definitely do another if I had a director like Ridley Scott and we had a good idea,” she says of the classic sci-fi movie franchise. “Ridley is enthusiastic about it.”

This poses a small problem as fans of the Alien series may remember, Ellen Ripley is dead. I have been reading some comments in regards to this latest interview and was reminded that it was Mrs. Weaver herself who asked to have the character killed off so that she would no longer have to play her. Careful what you wish for, I guess.

Even so, I still think they could do this, and give the Alien franchise the movie fans wanted after seeing the sequel. That is, Ripley, Newt, Bishop and Hicks alive and well…well, maybe not so well. I read a post over at CinemaBlend.com about a script that had the gang floating in hyperspace, much like the way Ripley was doing between the first and second film, for 300 years. This would explain the aging. They mention that the final two movies were just dreams being had by Ripley while in suspended animation. I’ve heard worse ideas get made into movies…I mean, anyone go see Hancock? Yeah, like I said.

The Hidden (1987)

Rating: ★★★★★★★½☆☆

The Hidden is one of my favorite films from the ’80s. It was an independent sci-fi\horror film that is often compared to Terminator, yet never achieved that film’s popularity. I continue to do my part by revamping my original review with a trailer and the original poster (the remastered DVD cover sucks ass). But as usual, before we get to the film, let’s take a look at the trailer. Surprisingly, it does capture the overall mood of the film.

Deadly Spawn (1983)

Deadly Spawn on Screamindemon.com

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

A meteor crashes to earth and unleashes a man-eating life form that is able to grow bigger and spawn more of it’s ilk after each subsequent kill. After making quick work of two inquisitive campers, the deadly spawn take refuge in the basement of a nearby farmhouse. This farmhouse is occupied by Sam (James Brewster) and Barb (Elissa Neil), their son the science major, Pete (Tom DeFranco), and his younger brother, the horror movie loving Charles (Charles George Hildebrandt) who likes to try and scare people with his collection of monster masks. Rounding out the household is Aunt Millie (Ethel Michelson) and Uncle Herb (John Schmerling) who are in town visiting. What follows is an enjoyably gory B-movie as the family finds out they have other guests, and what happens when they end up trapped in the house by fast growing, quickly multiplying spawn who do not seem to have any problems finding food in the form of people who just cannot stay out of the basement.
