One of RenderMan’s earliest uses in a feature film, the knight from the stained-glass window in the film, The Young Sherlock Holmes

RenderMan is celebrating its 20th birthday. RenderMan is the software developed by Pixar that was responsible for bringing computer graphics, for better or worse, to film-making. It was the first software to win an Oscar for its outstanding contributions to the field of film and according to RenderMan’s website, out of the last 44 films nominated for a Best Visual Effects Oscar, 41 used RenderMan. No shocker, actually, as RenderMan is responsible for such heavy-hitters as T2, The Matrix, Jurassic Park, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and not counting all of Pixar’s CG films. Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆

Director Andrew Stanton and the team that delivered Finding Nemo help Pixar knock another one out of the park with their latest movie detailing the adventure had by an extremely lovable robot named WALL-E. In the film, we see that humans created so much trash on Earth that it can no longer sustain life and a plan was hatched that had the human race take a vacation into space. During this time away, a troop of robots called WALL-E’s (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth class) will clean up all the mess we made and upon completion, we can return to the planet and do it all over again. The problem is that we never came back, and for some reason, the clean-up initiative was abandoned, leaving Wall-E alone. For 700 years, WALL-E continues his duties, his only companion in the form of a Twinkie eating cockroach, cleaning up the mess we made.

Disney has released a featurette promoting WALL-E, the new computer animated movie produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The film details a lone, forgotten robot named WALL-E, who had been placed here with a million other robots to help clean up all the trash left by us humans. The effort failed and we all vacated, but WALL-E was left functioning all by himself. For 700 years he has dutifully cleaned up trash on Earth and over this course of time, he has evolved to the point of having feelings. WALL-E falls in love with a robot probe named Eve who was sent to Earth and the film shows the journey WALL-E makes in his effort to win over the heart of another robot.

Check out the new featurette, titled A Hero’s Journey, after the jump.
