Bergman script to be performed…at the Opera.

Created on July 15th, 2008 by Mikey B

Ingmar Bergman at screamindemon.com

Ingmar Bergman is a man of great talent, poise and skill. He rose up to become one of the most revered directors in history and is in my top three as well. He wrote and directed most of his own films and always tackled personal subjects with amazing thoughtfulness and pride. With films like Hour of the Wolf, Wild Strawberries, Persona and the classic Seventh Seal it’s easy to see why Bergman’s influence is felt over 50 years later. Sadly, Bergman passed away almost a year ago to this date (July 30th), and followers of his work are left with his films as a way to remember the creative genius. That is, until now:

An unproduced Ingmar Bergman film script, “A Spiritual Matter,” is being made into an opera written by Italian composer Luca Francesconi.

The opera is based on a story from the Bergman book “Performances,” published in 2000, which consisted of three earlier unproduced scripts, “Faithless,” ”Love Without Lovers” and “A Spiritual Matter.”

I can hear some groans already, and I was all ready to jump on my high-horse and blast out a hateful E-mail to whomever I could. But, after reading the rest of the article, I actually find myself wishfully hoping that I’ll have a chance to see a work of Bergman come to life on the stage. An unproduced Bergman script that has yet to be seen? I, for one, cannot wait.

For the full story head over to Variety.
