While there’s always been a conflict of ideals when it comes to the old and young, it seems like nowhere is it more extreme than in Japan. While I don’t claim to be an expert here, it seems like this rebellious spirit is a much more current occurrence in Japan, and thus the gap is widening at a much heightened pace, and creates much hostility. The old think they have nothing in common with and are disrespected by the young, the young think the old are cramping their self-expression and have their eyes closed to how the world is evolving, and so on. This is certainly apparent in many Japanese films, such as Battle Royale, and now you can add Karaoke Terror to the list of films that has something to say about the subject. Director Tetsuo Shinohara however would like to point out that these different generations may have more in common with one another than they could ever have imagined.
